The Low-Sew prom dress pattern is very fast and easy to make. Basically, you use a ready-made cami, gather a rectangle of fabric for the skirt, sew the skirt to the cami, and wear a pretty t-shirt over the cami. If you can sew a straight seam, gathers, and a hem, you can do it. Here are instructions.
Materials Needed:
* Stretch top (to wear on outside)
* Cami, chemise, or tank top (will attach skirt to and wear underneath stretch top)
* 2 1/2 yards of 45″ or 60″ wide material for skirt (may need more if you are over about 5′ 8″ tall)
* Thread to match material
* Scissors or rotary cutter
* Sewing machine or serger
Step 1: Cut Your Material
Make sure the material is folded in half and lay it out on a cutting board or flat surface. Cut straight across at 1 1/4 yards. You should then have two identical pieces of material, each 1 1/4 yards long.
Step 2: Sew Material Together at Sides
Put the material with the right sides together. (Note: The “right side” is the side that will show when your dress is completed.) Sew the two side seams (each seam should be 1 1/4 yards long).
Step 3: Gather the Skirt
Using a long straight stitch, gather one edge of the material so that it fits the bottom of your stretch top
Step 4: Attach the Skirt to the Top
Sew the gathered edge of the skirt to your undershirt, tank top, or chemise. (Put the right sides of the skirt and top together, then sew.) You have now created most of your dress
Step 5: Check the Skirt Length
Try on your dress with the shoes you will be wearing. If necessary, shorten the skirt, remembering to allow for the hem
Step 6: Hem the Skirt
When the skirt is the correct length, hem the bottom.
To wear your prom dress, put on the skirt, then slip your outer top on over the undershirt/chemise/tank top.
